SUGGS' GUILTY PLEASURE LIVE ON BBC RADIO
Renowned club night Guilty Pleasures held a fantastic live event at London's Hackney Empire on March 20th, with guest artists including Suggs backed up with a house band and a 40-piece BBC Concert Orchestra.Artists included The Magic Numbers, The Specials' Terry Hall, Les McKeown (Bay City Rollers), Chas'N'Dave, Cerys Mathews and Ed Harcourt singing the classic 70s and 80s songs that made Guilty Pleasures such a successful nightclub.
After seeing Terry Hall duet with Cerys on "Islands in the stream"...
Suggs ended the evening singing classic "Love is in the air" with a light and enthusiastic mood that conveyed the song up to the theatres upper levels and saw a fitting conclusion to an excellent show presented by club night DJ Sean Rowley. BBC NEWS TALKS TO SUGGS
On the new album....
"While we wanted to get back to that classic pop/reggae Madness sound, we also wanted to create a more complex record for people of our age.... we started it last year and we are driving our managers to distraction. It's about half done. We booked five nights at the Hackney Empire in June to give us a deadline for launching it. But it's already looking like we are going to have to shift those dates. Hopefully, really hopefully, September. Maybe Christmas."
About Sway and Sorry...
"I first heard him through my daughters and I liked his stuff. We heard he liked Madness because the first flat he moved into someone had left a Madness album in a cupboard and
it was the only music he had for a while. We are careful of trying to combine styles of music but we tried this and it was perfect."
About ageing Madness...
"I feel that I am part of the first generation which didn't want to let go of being young.
It used to be pipe and slippers on the dot of 35 but that boundary is increasingly blurred.
At the same time as I would like Madness to have the same energy we had as kids, it would be undignified not to realise it has to change slightly and that has been going alright. I take a lot of inspiration from the film Buena Vista Social Club, that's how to grow old gracefully as a musician!
Remembering appearing on The Young Ones...
It was a great time. We knew Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall and those comedians and we would go and see each other perform. Then we were offered this TV series where Margaret Thatcher went back to Mars and we were elected to government. But the BBC decided it was too expensive. Then bits of that show turned up in this new comedy The Young Ones, so we went on. It had the same sense of fun we did, very spontaneous. You could veer off the script. One time we said 'Why don't we have a fight with police and smash up a few cars?' and they went 'great idea!'.
On appearing on Strictly Come Dancing...
"We get offered all sorts of things and the great thing about being in a band is that only about four of you have to turn up to make it happen and the rest can be padded out with blokes in sunglasses. Enough agreed to do Strictly to make it worthwhile. You can't argue with the bald facts, it's one of the most watched programmes on TV. Having done a bit of media, my attitude is a bit more laissez-faire. Some of the others think rock and roll should be more, well, rock and roll."

KILLER MADNESS - Nutty Queen track on ITV
AL MURRAY'S HAPPY HOUR - ITV1 - 22:25 - 23:25Saturday Night March 3rd and shown again Friday March 9th...
Catch Madness performing new single Sorry and a snippet of Our House on Al Murray's chat show.
For those not aware Al Murray's Pub landord is a comic character with old fashioned distilled ideas about what used to make Britain great. In this chat show vehicle for the character he performs stand up interviews celebrity guest in character and then forces the resident band to return to the bogs (which passes for the dressing room) and learn a song by Queen (the worlds greatest british band) to end the show with, often joining the band onstage to join in the singing. So Madness will have to attempt... Killer Queen.

Thanks to Mr Wheeze check out the Madness parts of the show at the above link.
Suggs and Woody appeared on Sky Sports Soccer AM show on Saturday morning. A clip of Sorry was played and presenter Tim asked how the young rappers became involed. Suggs was reading that Sway thought "Driving in my Car" was a great song when he was growing up and he liked Madness and Suggs found this odd with Sway being a rapper. He quipped "I asked him was he sure it wasnt 'Drive By in My Car' but no it turns out he grew upin Muswell hill."Tim asked why they felt ready now to do new "original" material after 1999's Wonderful. Woody made a claim that the band move in 7 year cycles. Woody explained the recent Dangermen history and how it was enjoyable and reminded the band what fun it can all be and it made them ready to start again with new tracks. Talking about new material they said they have 1/2 an album ready.
Talking about the Madstock Concerts the Earthquake story got another mention. Suggs explianed how 36,000 dancers during One Step Beyond "some of them overweight", caused tower blocks to move. They then displayed a top ten of earthquakes on screen showing the force of a small scale atomic bomb to be slightly less than 4.5, Ranking Madstock, just underneath the Nagaski bomb. Suggs said he had never felt so Proud.
Asked if another Madstock was going to happen. Woody and Suggs said they had thought of doing one in disguise, further explaining they had wanted to do a McMadstock in Scotland and a Padstock in Ireland. Which Suggs quickly renamed Oh Madstock as he thought Padstock was a little patronising, but Woody seemed a little sullen that the joke name wasnt going to be used. Suggs then explained how Madness talk alot but turning those ideas into actions is often harder and claimed they have been thinking about doing another Madstock since 1992. So we continue to wait...

SEVEN QUESTIONS WITH BEDDERS
MIS talks exclusively to Bass Legend Bedders about the Christmas tour, NW5, 2007 and that Moustache!1. Madness went to the edge of the universe and beyond with this Christmas tour.
What wonderous sights did you see?
Well, the rain of Glasgow was a wonderous sight! But every grey Glasgow cloud has a silver lining – we went to see The Pogues on our night off there. To hear 'Fairytale of New York', at Christmas, with the crowd singing every word was very rousing and very emotional.
The night after, at our gig, we had our 'Official Piper' turn up. His name was John and he wanted to pipe us on to the stage. Well you can't let a man in a kilt down, so he came on for the encore and did a fantastic version of 'Flower of Scotland'. Crowd went bananas...
Lee's dive from the stage, in Bournemouth, was also special. How does he still do that? And having Jerry Dammers around was brilliant – especially when Chris would get him to sing old Rod Stewart songs.
2. What's been your favourite song to play on this tour?
'Our House' always brings the house down.
3. We loved hearing NW5, many fans took this track to heart quickly. What's it like on stage playing a new track for the first time and does it change over the length of a tour?
As you might know, the old memory is not what it used to be so it wouldn't be giving any trade secrets away to say that I had to rely on a few bits of paper to remind me of the chords and the order of NW5! The giveaway is if you see me and Chris looking down a lot! Yes, the song did go through a few minor changes, as we went along. Mainly just to make it a bit better for a live audience.
4. Can you tell us anything at this stage about the new album and possible future plans for next year?
Well, there are a few tracks recorded but not finished. I took a bit of a break at the start of 2006 so I'm not on all of them. Like NW5, I might re-record the bass, at a later date. But there are plans to record a few more in the next couple of months. As for the future: well, keep June free.
5. What has been the greatest moment about having Chrissy Boy back on guitar during this tour?
Seeing the old boy put his guitar behind his head and wringing it's neck during Grey Day.
6. How long did it take you to grow that moustache we saw you sporting on the tour video screen during "It Must be Love" and where has it escaped to now?
Well, the moustache was flown in from Portugal. I had a surrogate (a Portuguese fisherman, actually) grow it for me. It was kept on ice and then a team of moustache dressers implanted it. After the video it was retired to stud and hopefully will be producing babies goatees for a long time to come.
7. Have Madness any plans yet for 7 minutes past 7pm on 7.07.2007 which is now just 7 months away?
Several.
Best wishes, Mark

A NUTTY NEW YEARS EVE
Lee Thompson performed a small low-key gig for new years eve in local pub The Red lion.
Here's Bex:
Just thought I'd let ya know how the gig went on NY eve. The band did 2 sets and featured 4/6s of Like Father Like Son - Kev and Dan Burdett on Guitars/Vocals, Lee - sax and vox and Nick Judd on keyboards. Then on the drums was a nice guy by the name of John - he used to be in Reece who Lee "unofficially" managed, and Jimmy Woodford on bass from JAG.
The first set opened with "Cool for Cats" with Lee reading lyrics from a piece of paper. They then rattled through their versions of "Town Called malice", "Ironshirt", "Get it On", "No No No (you don't love me)" and various others. All nicely done, though hilarious when Lee had to get his crib sheet of lyrics out for a couple of tunes.
The second set featured a great version of "walking on the moon" and then it basically turned into a Madness fest with "The Prince", "One Step Beyond", "Embarrassment", "My Girl", "IMBL", "Lovestruck" and finishing with "Night Boat..." which was in danger of causing the Landlord huge bills due to the amount of crazed dancing that was going on..
The band came off around 11.35pm then time to welcome in the new year. So, cue a mad stampede at the bar As the bongs of big ben sounded over the PA system, poppers went off
and the traditional sport of kissing and hugging as many people as possible began - I had a surprise when Si Birdsall grabbed me for a hug - he's such a lovely guy and went round saying happy new year to as many people as he could! A brilliant night and I really hope they do some more gigs!
